Services for Homeless Youth (SHY)

Catholic Charities Services for Homeless Youth (SHY)

Youth ages 16 to 24 may be eligible for services if they are experiencing homelessness, at risk of becoming homeless, or transitioning out of foster care. Catholic Charities serves young people throughout Central Minnesota, providing support obtaining or retaining safe and stable housing, case management, and life-skills coaching to help youth build a stronger future.

Every young person’s situation is different. Because of that, we work one-on-one with each youth to create a plan that meets their unique needs and goals. We help young people find stable housing, connect with community resources, and develop the skills needed for independent living. In addition, we provide guidance and support as youth work toward greater stability and self-sufficiency.

Our goal is to help young people build confidence, overcome barriers, and create a path toward long-term success. Whether someone needs help finding housing, pursuing education, securing employment, or accessing local resources, our team is ready to help.

Services May Include:

Street Outreach & SHY Program

Personalized Support & Life Skills Development

Every participant is paired with an Independent Living Skills (ILS) Counselor who serves as a mentor, advocate, and case manager throughout their time in the program. Together, they create an individualized plan focused on housing stability, education, employment, and independent living goals.

Support is tailored to each young person’s needs and may include:

  • Goal setting and action planning
  • Life-skills coaching
  • Housing and employment support
  • Education and career guidance
  • Connections to community resources
  • Ongoing encouragement and accountability

Counselors meet regularly with participants to help them build confidence, strengthen skills, and work toward long-term independence.

Progress, Referrals & Getting Started

Catholic Charities uses a variety of tools to help youth track their progress and celebrate milestones along the way. Participants develop an Independent Living Plan (ILP) that is reviewed and updated regularly, helping them stay focused on personal goals and growth.

Progress may be measured through:

  • Independent living assessments
  • Goal reviews and program evaluations
  • Exit and follow-up surveys
  • Improvements in housing stability, employment, education, and community connections

No referral is required. Youth may self-refer for services at any time. If you are between the ages of 16 and 24 and are experiencing homelessness, at risk of homelessness, or transitioning out of foster care, our team is here to help you explore available support and housing options.
